Chapter 1:   A beginning? May 2006

It was May 2006. My career had spanned 40 years in education. It had all been rather good particularly the early computers in the classroom stuff in Canada. But I wanted a change, well, lots of changes, really. Even though I had been back to Uni and added a design degree to my name I was still taking the train from Kingsgrove to Museum to work at the education office at 1 Oxford Street on a semi regular basis.

The view from Kingsgrove railway station was the pottery factory on one side and a range of old warehouses on the other. The trip was always unremarkable with many views of old graffi'tied factories. Museum Station still retained its original features. I loved the resonance of the red tiles.

On the morning of 31 May 2006 I arrived on the 17th floor to see the sun coming up through a dirty mist. I was looking through windows with venetian blinds prisoned between two sheets of glass. I looked down to Oxford Street and Taylor Square and the view to Central Station.

I'd always been creative and thought I wanted to design. It's true I love graphic design and enjoy any opportunity to indulge. But I'd always been told that my work was more art than design. I thought that it was time to explore that path.
