About Sue Jardin
After a creative life encompassing teaching, photography and craft making (jewellery and textiles) and a late life trip back to Uni for a design degree, I took a new direction into the art world.
I have long been fascinated by the urban garden and what it says about us. It daily presents us with the view of the cycle of life and constantly reminds us that life and death are woven together.
As we all do it responds to attention and nurturing. The urban garden tells us stories of the local community as it reflects both the history and the ambitions of the people living in the area.
If one were to check the DNA of plants from nearby gardens the picture would emerge of many shared slips and cuttings providing coherence to the street view.
My personal perspective of the garden is close up. I love to see the shapes, colours, textures, and the wear and tear of the environment and the insect world from just a few centimetres.
Curiously, I had changed my name to Jardin before I had found this focus on the garden. I had chosen Jardin for its use in the gemmology area. Jardin is the technical term for the inclusions (or faults) in emeralds and it is how gemmologists tell that an emerald is natural or artificially created. I loved the metaphor.
My artist’s tools are photography in conjunction with large scale digital printing, and mixed media and drawing. Previously my work was shown at Storm Gallery in Sydney www.giclee.com.au before its owner Cam Neville moved to Queensland at the end of 2010. You can also see some of these images through Storm Gallery’s link on Saatchi Gallery.
2011-2013 have been remarkably turbulent years including the breakup of a long term relationship and moving house twice, the latter move being interstate. At the end of 2012 I had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world I wanted. I chose Melbourne for its great style and avid art community.
Now in Autumn 2016 I know that this was a fantastic decision. My new garden is established and the work is starting to flow again.
